Requirements for Ontario students pursuing Elementary Education Certification:

STEP 1 - Liberal Arts and Science Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory concentration of 30 semester hours of college level credit in one of the liberal arts and sciences.
  • Successful completion of at least six semester hours of college level credit in each of the following disciplines: English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
  • One year of college level study or its equivalent of a language other than English.

STEP 2 - Education Course Work

ECI 530 Educational Explorations in Diversity (3 credits)
EDL 550 Developmental Literacy: Emergence to Fluency (3 credits)
EDL 560 Literature for Children (3 credits)
ECI 610 Transitions from Education’s Roots to Present (3 credits)
EDL 650 Assessment and Evaluation of Literacy (3 credits)
Methodology
EDU 500 The Core of Education 3 credits
EDU 502 Education Methods of Teaching: Math, Science, and Technology 3 credits
EDU 503 Education Methods of Teaching: The Arts, English, Language Arts, and Social Studies 3 credits
EDU 504 Early Field Experience/Seminar: Physical Education, Family/Consumer Sciences 3 credits
EDU 505 Child Abuse Identification, Substance Awareness and School Violence 3 credits
TOTAL CREDITS: 30

STEP 3 - Student Teaching (14 weeks)

  • Primary Situation - Grades 1 - 3 (7 weeks)
  • Intermediate Situation - Grades 4 - 6 (7 weeks)

STEP 4 - Certification Examinations

  • NYS Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)
  • NYS Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W)
  • NYS Content Specialty Test (CST)
  • Ontario Teacher Certifying Test

TUITION AND FEES

Graduate Education tuition for the 2003-04 academic year is $454 per credit hour. To complete the certification requirements, students must complete 30 credit hours of graduate coursework plus 6 credit hours of student teaching. Canadian students enrolled in the Elementary Education Certification automatically receive a 20% tuition discount. All costs are in U.S. funds.
