A Curriculum for Working Adults

In the Medaille ACCELerated Learning Program, education for working adults harmonizes both their personal and professional lives so that the educational experience will be a lasting source of personal growth, professional renewal, and career advancement. Learning in the ACCELerated Learning Program builds upon the experiences each student brings into the classroom. Classes are taught by working professionals with advanced degrees who possess current experience in the subject area of the courses they teach. Listed below is a sample of the ACCELerated Learning Program courses with brief descriptions.

Management, Skills and Application

In this course the student will gain an understanding of the principles and methods used in managing and operating organizations. Specific focus is placed on the application of management principles to realistic situations managers encounter, offering considerable insights into the challenges and opportunities confronting today's manager. Selected readings and cases will raise fundamental issues and provide practical illustrations of the meaning of the conceptual material discussed in class. This course is designed to enable the student to think as a manager and to provide the basic information needed to be successful in that role.

Legal Environment of Business

A comprehensive look at the legal environment that affects modern business. Concepts from law and ethics are applied to actual business situations, which afford the student an opportunity to examine not only legal concepts but also the values, morals, and ethical codes associated with the business environment. Although the American corporation is of principal interest, international law and business practices also will be discussed. Extensive use of case studies will enable the student to integrate legal concepts with practical business applications.

Negotiation and Dispute Resolution

A study of the range of effective negotiations and dispute resolution practices. The student will develop an awareness of behavior in negotiation and of the effect or response that his or her communication has upon others. This study afford the student an opportunity to cultivate and apply a special expertise in negotiations and dispute resolutions within such professional fields as human resource management and labor relations.

Global Business Perspectives

An inquiry into the internationalization process and multinational management. Using case studies, the student will investigate the management practices of a variety of firms, located in the United States and elsewhere, that have entered the increasingly competitive global marketplace when their home market perspective is no longer adequate.
